8th Grade Softball Defeats Plainfield

The Brownsburg West Middle School 8th Grade Softball team pulled off a thrilling 17-16 victory over the Plainfield Quakers on Wednesday, thanks to a huge rally in the seventh inning. The Lady Bulldogs came out swinging, jumping to an early lead in the top of the first inning. Kaylee Mock and Brooklyn Andrew each hit doubles to bring in three runs, following an error that scored the game's first run. Brownsburg extended the lead in the second, with Dawsyn Carroll doubling to center field and Vika Huddleston grounding out to bring in another pair of runs. Plainfield battled back and eventually took the lead, 8-7, in the fourth. The game continued to go back and forth, but the Bulldogs never gave up. In the top of the seventh, Brownsburg flipped the script with a six-run outburst, sparked by five hits. The highlight of the inning came when Mock singled in two runs and Penny Athans nailed a homerun over the fence to give the Bulldogs a late 17-14 lead. Vivian Birkla and Brooke Edwards combined efforts on the mound to secure the win. Birkla struck out six, while Edwards added two more in relief. Birkla returned in the seventh and sealed the game with the final strikeout. The entire team stepped up defensively, making key plays throughout to hold off Plainfield’s comeback attempts. Offensively, the Lady Bulldogs racked up 18 hits. Athans led with four RBIs, including a clutch two-run single in the sixth and an impressive home run to right field in the seventh. Brooklyn Andrew went 4-for-5 to lead the team in hits, showcasing the depth of the lineup. Sophia Helms, Vivian Birkla, and Dawsyn Carroll also collected multiple hits in the game.
